Day 9: Barnstaple to Ilfracombe

1st February 2016

Service 21 at Ilfracombe
Most of today was taken up with the train journey from Lancaster, especially as I couldn't find a cheap reasonable fare available before the 09.56 departure.  The journey involved a couple of tightish connections, particularly at Barnstaple where my train was due in 2 minutes before the bus to Ilfracombe was due out.
I wasn't really expecting to make that one, but a combination of a one-minute early arrival and the bus being a couple of minutes late meant it was easy after all.

The only excitement at Ilfracombe!

So the first bus of this part of the project - and the first bus of 2016 - was a Stagecoach double-decker on service 21.  I remember travelling between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe on a Western National (or was it Southern National) Bristol Lodekka in the 1960s as part of a day out involving a trip on a paddle steamer from Mumbles Pier but can't say I recognised any of the route. In the event it was a rather straightforward journey and we arrived at what passes for a bus terminal in Ilfracombe just as it was getting dark.

I did venture out later to get something to eat. I know one shouldn't expect too much excitement in a small resort on a Monday night in February, but I don't think I have ever seen a place so dead! The only excitement was down at the harbour!. .
